In 1883, Johan Svendsen’s wife Sarah expressed her displeasue with him by throwing the only example of his 3rd Symphony in the fire (an incident used by Ibsen in Hedda Gabler).That was the end of the story until tonight’s conductor, Bjarte Engeset found Svendsen’s sketches for the work in the Royal Library in Copenhagen. The excerpts presented here in a centennial celebration for the composer offer a fascinating glimpse of a Symphony never before heard.
